Intermittent Fasting An ‘Effective Strategy’ To Reduce Breast Cancer Risk

Intermittent fasting has emerged recently as a trendy weight loss avenue, but a study involving mice suggests it may hold serious cancer-fighting capabilities as well.

“Previous research has shown that obesity increases the risk of a variety of cancers by negatively affecting how the body reacts to insulin levels and changing circadian rhythms,” says senior author Nicholas Webster, PhD, professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine in a university release.

“We were able to increase insulin sensitivity, reduce hyperinsulinemia, restore circadian rhythms and reduce tumor growth by simply modifying when and for how long mice had access to food.”

While these findings only involve mice, the potential avenues for human breast cancer prevention they open up are promising. The American Cancer Society estimates one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

As vaccinations ramp up across the globe, finding out who does and doesn’t have COVID-19 remains a major hurdle. Now, researchers say rats may be able to help sniff out the coronavirus pandemic before it spreads further.

The suggestion comes from scientists training giant rats to sniff out a deadly disease that destroys herds of goats and cows in the world’s poorest countries.

Brucellosis is a highly contagious zoonotic disease that causes flu-like symptoms in humans. Patients may also develop problems in the bones, joints, and heart, and in some cases, the illness is fatal.

Moo Pat, a Mexican beekeeper, blames China for his financial plight. There, cheap honey and sugar syrup are produced on an industrial scale and blended together by fraudsters.

Beekeepers believe this adulterated honey is responsible for saturating the market, crashing global prices and deceiving millions of customers.

“Most of the honey imported from China into Europe is blended with syrup,” says Etienne Bruneau, chairman of the honey working party at the European agricultural umbrella organization Copa-Cogeca.

“In China, they tell you if you want honey it’s one price and if you want a cheaper price you can have syrup in it.”
